Florida Senator Rick Scott has introduced legislation to condemn the use and teaching of the “divisive” Critical Race Theory (CRT) in K-12 schools and in the training of teachers.
The racism-based education concept has seen increased popularity and has been widely disseminated as a result of the civil unrest brought upon by the Black Lives Matter movement that has culminated in extensive property damage, physical assaults, and even the loss of life.
Critical race theory is based on the thought or belief that American society is based on racism.
“Since America’s founding, our nation has strived to be a land of opportunity for all. While we cannot ignore the scars of our past, we also cannot tolerate the attempts of the woke left to weaponize our history in radical curriculums that teach our children to see America only for its worst days, and the American people only for their darkest hours,” stated Sen. Scott. “The far-left wants Americans to believe that our nation is inherently racist and bad. They want to discredit the values America was founded on. They’re wrong. We can’t stand by and allow ’woke’ liberals to divide our nation. Students in Florida and every state across this nation deserve better and I’m proud to lead my colleagues today in a resolution to stand up against this dangerous policy.”
Sen. Scott echoes Sen. Marco Rubio’s thought that students should be taught the skills they need to get a job and not be trained to become “a generation of cultural Marxist activists.”
“Why the American taxpayer should be subsidizing teaching our young students how to hate America, how to hate everything about our history, why we should be spending taxpayer money to teach these things that are destructive, not to mention untrue, is beyond me,” said Sen. Rubio in a recent interview on The Rush Limbaugh Show.
Sens. Scott and Rubio can address CRT at the federal level, and now Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has pledged to defund CRT and abolish it from the statewide curriculum and recently said that he would target school board candidates who believe in, and would teach CRT to students.
Congressman Greg Steube (R) has also recently condemned the U.S. military of teaching CRT and “Marxism” to recruits and to existing military personnel.
While Republicans reject the education concept, Democrats support it and are accusing Republicans of wanting to suppress the teaching of slavery and segregation, and of keeping students from learning about Black history.
“Critical race theory is a way to discuss systemic racism in our country, and the history of how Black people & people of color have been marginalized,” state State Senator Shevrin Jones.
I won't allow woke liberals to divide Americans with Critical Race Theory. Our students deserve better. I’m proud to be joined by @MarshaBlackburn & @SenatorBraun in standing up against this dangerous policy: https://t.co/qUhGGzqTQ2
