Michael Hammond (Oct. 1 letter) has the right battle cr, but identified the wrong extremists and the true purveyors of authoritarian, dystopian policies and governance – Democrats and the National Education Association.
At the outset, let me commend our current school board and the school division for standing firm against the implementation of full-blown Critical Race Theory (CRT) ideology into our local schools and curricula. The pressure to conform is relentless, so know that many of us are standing behind you and are watching closely to help you hold the line.
Parents everywhere are waking up to the reality of CRT principles being taught in their schools, and they are fighting back. While Mr. Hammond claims that anti-CRT parents and Republican elected officials are dictatorial and curtail ideas and innovation, we see all over the country, even as close as Loudon County to our north, the way that some school board members and education organizations belittle and attack parents who think for themselves and dare to question and oppose their curricula.
You see, for Mr. Hammonds and others on the left, if they oppose you, they are free-thinkers and innovators. But if you oppose them and resist their narrative, you are an extremist. Remember what Terry McAuliffe said at the last debate: “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”
We need to fully understand the stain of slavery on our nation. We must learn from our history, to include repulsive parts of it, lest we repeat it. What we oppose is the effort to view America, past and present, through a myopic lens of slavery and using that to divide our children and fellow citizens into categories of “oppressors” or “victims,” based solely on skin color or other God-given, immutable attributes. CRT portrays America as a hopeless, systemically racist country, while minimizing the greatness of her accomplishments and the manifold opportunities and prosperity it has brought to more people from all races and backgrounds than any other country in history.
Mr. Hammond repeats the Democrat and media talking points that CRT is a myth, is not being taught in our schools, and exists only in “tired talking points from outrage factories on Fox News.” Mr. Hammond, we need go no further than the NE), which donates vast sums of money to Democrat candidates, to see that CRT is real and they intend to push it.
Check this link out for yourselves.
This a business item considered by the NEA at their July 21 annual meeting. (NOTE: The NEA subsequently deleted all content with references to CRT.) Some excerpted quotes:
• “Provide an already-created, in-depth, study that critiques empire, white supremacy, anti-Blackness, anti-indigeneity, racism, patriarchy, cisheteropatriarchy, capitalism, ableism, anthropocentrism, and other forms of power and oppression at the intersections of our society, and that we oppose attempts to ban critical race theory and/or The 1619 Project.” (Emphasis mine.)
• “The Association will further convey that in teaching these topics, it is reasonable and appropriate for curriculum to be informed by academic frameworks for understanding and interpreting the impact of the past on current society, including critical race theory.”
• “…educate members on the tools and resources needed to defend honesty in education including but not limited to tools like CRT.”
Thank you, NEA (not Fox News), for affirming your commitment to CRT and letting us know what you want to emphasize in teaching our kids in public schools.
In closing, I thank Mr. Hammond for highlighting how the left engages in projection and ad hominem attacks, and for reminding us why he should never be elected to the school board.
And if you don’t want continued authoritarian government that crushes dissent at all levels, as we see in China, divides us and imposes crushing mandates on education, business and normalcy, vote Republican in November.
