Malta has officially become the first European country to fully legalize marijuana, for all uses, for everyone 18+. Malta President George Vella has officially signed into law legislation that legalizes marijuana for everyone 18 and older.

"Act LXVI of 2021, which establishes the Authority on the Responsible Use of Cannabis and amends various laws relating to certain cannabis activities, has entered into force today, thereby a strong and robust reform is being implemented in the way our society perceives and treats citizens who make responsible and genuine use of cannabis, while curbing illegal trafficking and creating a new regulatory framework to protect minors and society at large", said MP Owen Bonnici, the bill's prime sponsor, in a press release.

According to the release, the new law "Will provide the possibility of cultivating up to a maximum of four plants in households for personal use and will provide for the possibility of creating a regularised and safe source from which a person can obtain cannabis and cannabis seeds in limited and controlled amounts, under strict conditions. The latter will happen through the introduction of strictly regulated outlets, operated by non-profit associations, and registered with the Authority on the Responsible Use of Cannabis."
